Getting Your American Passport Renewal Completed By Mail

by Frank Walters

American holidays looking to travel overseas for their holidays should be careful that a passport renewal isn't pending. The hassle involved in getting this organized quickly is enormous, particularly if it's done by post. Several factors should be considered when attempting to renew by post.

A passport will expire ten years after it's date of issue. If you are a minor, it will expire in five years. It is recommended that you renew nine months prior to the expiry date which you will find on your documents.

Be aware that you can only renew by mail if your initial application was made within the last fifteen years, otherwise will have to renew it in person. Similarly, if it is damaged or was issued before you reached sixteen years of age, you need to renew in person. And that rule also applies to people who have legally changed their name.

If you are eligible to renew by post and live in the United States, you need to submit form DS-82: Application for a U. S. Passport by Mail. This form has to be submitted with your current documentation, a separate photo and the fee. For security reasons, it is advisable to use a traceable delivery service to mail your documents.

If you are an American citizen living outside the United States, you will have to renew at the United States Embassy or Consulate in your country of residence. The exception is for those American citizens who are residing in Canada. They can apply in the same way as those within American borders do. In all cases, the processing of applications can take four to six weeks.

If this timeframe is too long for you, you can fast-track your application by marking the word "Expedite" on your application envelope and enclose a check for $60. This will shorten your processing time to 2-3 weeks. However, this is only applicable to U. S. Residents.

Once your application has been processed your old passport will be sent back to you. It will in all likelihood be returned independently of your new documents. It is advisable to retain this, as it can help certify your status as a U. S. Citizen.

Now, not everyone will want to use the postal service for their passport renewal, which is understandable. The option to apply in person is also there. However, if you do require a postal renewal, keep the above in mind and consult your local government authority for up-to-date information regarding the processes and procedures.
