It was at this time that an Australian entrepreneur, Friedl Pfeifer and Chicago industrialist Walter Paepcke came together to brainstorm. The two, along with Paepcke's wife, opened the first ski resort there, and they opened the doors to the longest chairlift in the world. Their venture set the foundation for the Aspen we know today.
The main attraction of Aspen, and its undisputed claim to fame, has got to be the four majestic mountains. Located about 250 miles southwest of Denver, these mountains are a prime terrain for skiing of all types.
The Aspen Mountain, also known as Ajax, is best suited to seasoned skiers. Ajax provides more than 3,200 vertical feet on 700 acres.
The Aspen Highlands are another favorite. The highlands offer a challenge to the experienced skiers, and it also has pistas available for the intermediate and novel skier. A number of Olympic medalists spend their time at the Aspen Highlands.
The Buttermilk is the other jewel. It is a great place for novel skiers, but it is challenging enough for everyone. It is proud to be housing the longest terrain park, and also ESPN Winter X Games of the world. Held at the end of January, the ESPN Winter X Games are a huge tourist draw.
