One The Road:Motorhome Hire In The UK

by Ash Strain

Every year millions of visitors choose to spend their precious holiday weeks in the UK. Some come from overseas, while others are domestic holidaymakers. There is a lot to see and do in the UK and many choose to explore by road trip, in a motorhome. But not everyone is fortunate enough to own one of these hotels on wheels. And fortunately there are lots of places offering motorhome hire in the UK.

Companies that rent out motorhomes can be found all over the UK. Individual fleets of course will differ, but will generally include a range of makes and models. Sizes usually range between those designed to accommodate two people to much larger ones for seven. Some specialise in vintage vehicles and there are others to cater for those wanting the most modern, high-tech models.

Most companies will expect renters to collect the vehicles themselves from their premises. Although, that said, some do offer to deliver to your house. Even if you are collecting yourself, you will probably need to take the vehicle to your house to load up. So you'll need to have enough space to keep it near your home.

When it comes to costs, prices will be determined by the rental length as well as vehicle size. It's worth shopping around to compare. For the most part, those who choose motorhome rental over say, staying in a hotel, often find the former less expensive. Plus you have your 'hotel' on hand all the time!

When thinking about where you are going to go and where you're going to stop overnight it's worth bearing in mind that some campsites require advance booking. Also some are not open all year round. Most campsites cater for all types of campers, from those in tents and caravans and will have special larger pitches for motorhomes.

Each rental company has their own set of conditions when renting, but they will share some things in common. For example, there will be a minimum age requirement applicable to the main driver and anyone else who'll be driving during the course of the rental. Upper age limits also apply with some, but not all firms. The length of time the driver has held his or her licence may also be a factor.

Some travellers like to venture outside the UK and hop on a ferry to France. Most companies allow you to take their vehicles overseas and will provide the additional insurance coverage. At a cost, of course. Other insurance packages on offer may include excess reduction or elimination.

Modern vehicles really are travelling hotels, with everything you need right there on board! At the very least, even the most basic models will have a kitchen area with fridge and stove, a living area which often doubles up for sleeping and a separate bathroom. When looking at motorhome hire in the UK, most companies will be able to give guidance to first timers on the basics of motorhome management. They may also offer other additional extras for hire, like GPS, bikes, racks or generators to make for a smooth and comfortable trip.
